The D&R Orion X is a 16 buss in-line format recording and mixing console. With a minimalistic audio path design, the circuitry not only provides tremendous headroom and crystal clear sound, but noise and distortion so low it's almost like a straight wire. The console is unlike any other as it uses floating subgroups instead of a dedicated buss or direct output system.
Each channel strip features a four band semi-parametric EQ and six aux sends on the main input, and a two band semi-parametric EQ and two aux sends on the tape return. The tape return and main input can be reversed, and two bands on the main EQ can be switched into the secondary return in addition to its two band EQ. There is a 60mm short throw fader on the secondary input, while the main input is controlled by a 100mm fader. The console features LCRS panning for surround applications, and buss assignments that in turn can feed the floating subgroups. So what is a floating subgroup you ask? Well, quite simply, assign a channel(s) to a subgroup, and on the equivalent channel for the tape input required, press the "from subs" button for the necessary group. Done! The board magically routes the channel input(s) to the desired tape track, all without repatching. Once you work on a D&R with floating subgroups, you'll never go back!!! The board features powerful VCA automation that runs on the PC platform, and virtual/power dynamics can also be fitted.
The 53 size frame can be fitted with a 13 channel strip wide patchbay, which eliminates a significant cost in wiring and patchbays. 120 tie lines facilitate tying patch points to existing patchbays. I opted to forego the patchbay and install an extra 8 input modules, for 110 inputs on mixdown. There are still six normal blank modules in my frame, and if I sacrifice the blanks on either end, I can expand the console to 48 mono input modules, for 126 inputs on mixdown. Mind's Eye Productions features a fully maxed out 48 mono and 6 dual stereo module Orion X.
