The Sony TCD-D100 is one of the latest ultra compact DAT portables from Sony. The TCD-D100's enclosure is made of magnesium, for light weight and also to commemorate Sony's tenth anniversary for DAT Walkmans. The D100 is the first portable DAT to include a small wired remote (with counter and metering to boot) and is great for "stealthing" at concerts.
The D100 supports a proprientary multibit 32kHz sampling rate which doubles record time, along with the standard 44.1kHz and 48kHz sampling rates. The unit features manual gain control, manual gain control with limiting, and automatic gain control modes. The D100 supports absolute time code and also features date and time stamp, handy for finding segments in live recordings. Another nice feature is the addition of renumbering and manual ID modes so there's no need to resort to a full size deck later. The US TCD-D100 package includes the DAT deck, two high capacity Nickel Metal Hydride batteries (good for four hours of recording), AC power adapter, battery charger, leatherette case, remote, and headphones. I find the D100 a marked improvement over the earlier D3, D7, and D8 models, and think it's worth every penny of upgrading - if not for the extra record time alone.
